줄거리
미국 남부의 배우지 못하고 일자무식한 청년 하젤 모트스는 세상에서 자신이 인정받기 위해 종교라는 무기를 선택하고 자신만의 교회를 설립하기로 한다. 하지만 교회를 설립하는 과정에서 점점 광신자로 돌변하는 이 젊은 순례 전도자는 이제 자신의 신념이 완벽히 신의 음성이라고 믿지만 그는 끊임없이 세상과 충돌하며 무너져 간다.
